Ever since the beginning of time, man has competed against each other. The quest for food, shelter and a good woman to do the housework has always been a natural drive. As mans technology developed, this basic behavior became more sophisticated. The competition grew. Who had the fastest cart, who was the best hunter and finally who had the fastest sailboat?
The Spring Fling was a prime example of raw competition, nerves of steel and the importance of a good mate to do the grunt work.
The start line saw seven captains in a fierce real estate battle. Kinda reminiscent of a bunch of vultures fighting over fresh road kill. To prove how intense this group was, all seven boats crossed the start line in under one minute. This was a first in HBYC racing history.
Lady In Red jumped into the lead with Cat Can Do, Soiree and Callystos less than 10 seconds behind. Just short of bumper to bumper traffic after a Ray’s game, this group battled their way to the first mark. Inspiration, Sounds Good and Time 2 Cruise were just watching the show ahead , drafting the leaders and formulating their race plan
Cat Can Do stole the inside line from LIR while Soiree pulled a great maneuver and slid right in between both of them. Only a few inches separated the three boats. The Cat made the first move and what a move it turned out to be! She tacked on the mark and instantly so did Soiree and LIR. All three headed for the next mark except for one minor problem. Cat Can Do snagged the buoy with her rudder and was dragging it into the path of both other boats.
To the rest of the fleet this must have looked like grid lock in the Hud. Callystos was bearing down, Sounds Good , Time 2 Cruise and Inspiration would capitalize on the situation and get by the tangled Cat.
In a two lap race many things can happen. One fact seems that it’s very tough to beat determination and a good sailing technique. The winds were favorable and the different strategies of several boats seemed to pay off.
(ed. As for Soiree, her handicap will be more dismal for the next race. Come on out and beat her butt!)
Enough for now, my wife says I have to pay more attention to what she says! HUH?
